GIA Updates Lab-Grown Diamond Grading: What It Means for Engagement Rings Burdeen’s Jewelry | Jewelry Stores in Chicago | Buffalo Grove

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has just announced a major change in how it grades lab-grown diamonds—a move that’s set to reshape how couples shop for engagement rings.

What’s Changing?

Traditionally, diamonds have been graded using the 4Cs: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. But for lab-grown diamonds, GIA is retiring that system. Instead of detailed 4Cs reports, GIA will now categorize lab-grown diamonds as either:

  • Premium

  • Standard

  • Or Uncategorized if they don’t meet minimum standards

This new approach begins later this year and is based on years of research and shifts in the diamond industry.

Why the Change?

Over the past few years, nearly all lab-grown diamonds submitted to GIA have received very high grades—making the 4Cs less useful in helping buyers differentiate. Most stones were already in the top tier of color and clarity. So, instead of listing nearly identical grades over and over, GIA is simplifying things.

What Does This Mean for Shoppers?

If you're shopping for a lab-grown engagement ring at a trusted jewelry store in Chicago or Buffalo Grove, this update makes it easier to understand what you’re getting. A "Premium" grade ensures the diamond meets high standards, while "Standard" still reflects excellent value and quality.

At Burdeen’s Jewelry, we carry a curated selection of both natural and lab-grown diamonds—all with full transparency on grading and certification. Whether you’re browsing at our Buffalo Grove showroom or at one of our Chicago jewelry boutiques, our experts are here to guide you.

GIA’s new grading system makes choosing a lab-grown engagement ring more straightforward than ever. It's part of a larger trend toward clear, honest diamond buying experiences—something we value deeply at Burdeen’s.
